Damn You Kyle Chandler

So the other night we are sitting around scrolling phones, clicking around the streaming services to find something to watch - as one does, grumbling about when is football gonna finally start (ok that last one was me), when I remembered the Lanterns series had dropped on HBO.

After raising 2 boys and living with me for 28 years, Liz has seen enough football and super hero movies to last her 2 lifetimes, so I knew her default response would be no. But, I also knew I had a secret weapon.

One thing I have come to know about my wife is that since the show Friday Night Lights, Kyle Chandler could recite the alphabet and she would watch it. I am 100% certain he is in her Fantasy 5 - probably top 2. He can do no wrong in her eyes. I took advantage of this.

"Hey babe. Wanna try that new super hero show on HBO? Lanterns?"

"What? Tonight? Do we have to?"

"How bout we watch the trailer and then decide?"

"Ok, I guess. I'll be there in a minute"

I queued up the trailer. She came into the living room and plopped down on the couch.

"Ok. Lets see it"

I hit play. The trailer starts. It's dark we see a figure enter a room and throw water on a guy in bed as he says"It's time to get up Jr."

You can't even see the person throwing the water, we only hear the voice. It's like super dark and immediately she says -

"That's Kyle Chandler. Friday Night Lights. I'm in. Lets DOOO IT."

I'm not gonna lie - it stung a little. I mean lets be honest - he is a handsome man - I'm not an idiot, but I couldn't help but think of the double standard.

If I had done the same with lets say, Scarlett Johanssen, she would spend the next 24 hours giving me the cold shoulder and saying things like "Why don't you ask Scarlett where you put your car keys?" or "Maybe Scarlett can make you a turkey a sandwich."

It would be hell. But, I dare not bring that up. Nope. She got Kyle and I got to watch my superhero show. As a seasoned vet in the marriage game, I had hit a solid double. No need to get greedy. Time to quit while I as ahead - something it took me years to learn.

28 years and I'm finally getting the hang of this marriage thing. Sweet.

PS - the show is great and has a True Detective crime feel more than superhero. Give it a try.
